NHS England Director of Long Term Conditions, Dr Martin McShane at Forward ME

Dr McShane spoke to the Forward ME group last week. He spoke of changes needed in the NHS to help people with long term conditions in a new model of care which would empower patients.

He would like to see a broadening of the dialogue of doctor and patient to include carers and the community. He spoke of a change of focus from treating a disease to treating a person.

He said the NHS had traditionally taken a biomedical approach but if we ignore ‘dis-ease’ we exacerbated the problem. He spoke of the need to understand the holistic approach, and change the nature of the GP consultation.

The minutes of the meeting will be posted once available.
